Sleep masks
Blackout masks for side sleepers, travel and home, compared on comfort, fit and price.
Fit matters more here than fabric. A flat silk mask packs small and stays cool, while a contoured or eye cup design lifts the fabric off your lashes so you can open your eyes in the dark, which is what gets you closest to real blackout. Weighted masks add gentle pressure across the eye sockets instead, so check the strap style if you sleep on your side.

Common questions
How much should a sleep mask cost?
The masks we track run from around fifteen dollars for a flat mulberry silk mask to the mid forties for a contoured or weighted design. The table above shows the exact price we verified for each and the date we checked it. Above that range you are usually paying for a brand or for bundled extras like ear plugs and a carry case.
Are contoured sleep masks better than flat ones?
They are better at one specific thing: keeping fabric off your lashes so you can open your eyes in the dark and so nothing presses on your eyelids. That matters a lot to some sleepers and not at all to others. Flat silk masks pack smaller, run cooler and cost less, so if pressure on the eyes has never bothered you there is no reason to pay more.
Do sleep masks actually block all light?
No mask blocks all of it. The gap at the bridge of the nose is where light gets in on almost every design, and how well a mask seals there depends on your face more than on the price. Designs with a moulded nose section or an adjustable nose flap do better, and none of them is a blackout curtain.
Can you wash a sleep mask?
It depends on the fill. Plain silk and cotton masks are usually hand-wash. Weighted masks and anything with foam or beads generally are not machine washable as a whole, and the maker will specify spot cleaning or a removable cover. We list the care instruction as its own spec line on every product page here, because it is the detail people find out too late.
