The 6 best white noise machines (updated August 2026)
Updated Aug 27, 2026 ยท prices dated per offer
White noise machines split into two camps: real fans spinning inside a housing, and digital speakers playing synthesized noise. Fan machines sound more natural and never loop; digital machines give you more sounds, more volume and more features per dollar. Neither is objectively better, they mask background noise in different ways.
We compared six machines across both camps, from the 60 year old Dohm design to an app-controlled smart fan and a nursery unit built around a subscription. A note on what these do: they mask background noise like traffic or a snoring partner. They are not a treatment for insomnia and we will not pretend otherwise. Best overall value
1. LectroFan Classic
The LectroFan Classic packs 20 genuinely non-looping sounds, ten fan variations and ten noise colors, into a pocket-sized USB-powered box. It gets loud enough to mask traffic and snoring, and the stepless volume dial goes from whisper to roar.
The annoyances are small: no display means cycling through sounds to find your favorite, and the timer maxes out at 60 minutes. For the price, nothing else here matches its combination of variety and masking power.
Skip it if: you want a screen or a favorites button, since finding one of the 20 sounds means cycling through the whole list every time.
Sold out on the manufacturer site (page still displays pricing while item is unavailable to purchase)
Best real-fan sound
2. Yogasleep Dohm Classic
The Dohm is an actual fan in a plastic shell you twist to change the tone. That is the whole product, and it is exactly why people keep buying a design that has existed for over 60 years: the sound is real moving air, steady and loop-free, with nothing to configure.
It only makes fan noise, it stays plugged in at your bedside, and in very loud environments the max volume may not be enough. If you find digital white noise artificial, this is the antidote.
Skip it if: you want more than fan noise, or you live somewhere loud enough that a small mechanical fan cannot cover it.
Best smart machine
3. SNOOZ Pro
The SNOOZ Pro puts a real fan inside an app-controlled housing: schedules, fade in and fade out, and a 46 to 87 dBA volume range that covers everything from background hum to serious masking. The app is free with no subscription.
It costs more than twice as much as the basic machines here, and some users report Bluetooth hiccups. Pay the premium only if you will actually use the scheduling; otherwise the Dohm gives you the same fan sound for less than half the price.
Skip it if: you will never actually use the scheduling, since the Dohm makes a similar fan sound for less than half the price.
Best for an all-night timer
4. LectroFan Evo
The Evo is the Classic with its two annoyances fixed. The timer runs up to 8 hours instead of 60 minutes, so it covers a whole night without a reset, and the sound list grows to 22: ten fan variations, ten noise colors and two ocean sounds, all digitally synthesized and non-looping. A wall adapter comes in the box, so it does not have to tie up a USB port on your nightstand.
It still has no display, so picking a specific sound means cycling through all 22, and it runs about seven dollars more than the Classic. LectroFan listed both colors as sold out on its own site when we checked, so confirm availability before you plan around it.
Skip it if: you need one this week, since LectroFan showed both colors sold out at the price check above.
Sold out directly from LectroFan as of 2026-08-27
Best for a nursery
5. Hatch Baby (Hatch Rest)
Hatch aims this one at kids' rooms: a sound machine, a night light and a routine light in one unit with tactile buttons on top, so starting the bedtime routine does not require unlocking a phone. Purchase includes three months of Hatch+, a 30 night bedside trial and a one year warranty, per Hatch.
The subscription is the thing to know going in. The expanded content library runs on Hatch+ once those three months end, and Hatch does not publish the renewal price on the product page. It is also the successor to what was sold as Hatch Rest, so older reviews you find will use the old name.
Skip it if: you want an adult bedroom machine with no app and no ongoing cost, since the full library sits behind Hatch+ after the included three months.
Listed as "Hatch Baby" on Hatch's site; formerly sold as Hatch Rest
Best budget
6. Dreamegg Classic D1
The Dreamegg Classic D1 gives you 24 sounds, a night light and a flexible 15 to 90 minute timer at the lowest price in this roundup. For a nursery or a first white noise machine it covers a lot of ground.
The honesty caveat: reviewers have flagged short audible loops on some of this line's digital tracks, so do not expect the seamlessness of a real fan. At this price, that tradeoff is fair.
Skip it if: audible loops bother you, since reviewers have flagged short repeating tracks on this line's digital sounds.

Common questions
Fan-based or digital, which should I get?
Fan machines like the Dohm and SNOOZ sound more natural and never loop, but only make fan noise. Digital machines like the LectroFan and Dreamegg offer many sounds and get louder per dollar. If looping bothers you, go fan-based or pick a digital machine with genuinely non-looping synthesis like the LectroFan.
How loud should a white noise machine be?
Loud enough to mask the noise that wakes you, and no louder. The SNOOZ publishes its range as 46 to 87 dBA; most people land well below the maximum. Placing the machine closer to the noise source, like a window, works better than turning it up.
Do white noise machines help babies sleep?
They mask household noise, which can prevent wake-ups; the Dreamegg is explicitly marketed for nurseries. Follow pediatric guidance on volume and distance from the crib.
Is the LectroFan Evo worth the step up from the Classic?
Only for the timer and the extra sounds. The Evo runs its sleep timer up to 8 hours against the Classic's 60 minutes, adds two ocean sounds for 22 total, and includes a wall adapter. If you leave a machine running all night with no timer set, the Classic already does that for less.
